HILO, Hawaiʻi – Hawaiʻi Island police have charged 22-year-old Alaina Kainoa-Aukai of Ocean View with multiple serious offenses, including attempted murder, stemming from a traffic collision that severely injured her boyfriend in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision on Tuesday evening, June 17, 2025.

The incident unfolded at approximately 9:10 p.m. when Kaʻū patrol officers responded to a report of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision near Princess Kaiulani Boulevard and Lotus Blossom Lane. Upon arrival, officers identified Kainoa-Aukai as the vehicle’s operator, noting she displayed signs of impairment.

Police determined that the pedestrian, a 24-year-old Ocean View man, was Kainoa-Aukai’s boyfriend. He sustained substantial bodily injuries and was transported to Kona Community Hospital for treatment.

Further investigation by police detectives indicated that Kainoa-Aukai had allegedly been involved in a domestic dispute with the victim just prior to the collision.

During her arrest, Kainoa-Aukai reportedly became combative, kicking an officer multiple times in the leg before she was placed into a police transport vehicle.

Kainoa-Aukai was taken to the Kona Police Station. After conferring with the Hawaiʻi County Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday, June 19, she was officially charged with:

Second-degree attempted murder
Second-degree assault
First-degree negligent injury
Operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant
First-degree assault against a law enforcement officer

Her total bail has been set at $1,020,000. Kainoa-Aukai is scheduled to make her initial court appearance in Kona District Court on Friday, June 20.

Police are urging anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Area II Criminal Investigation Division Detective Scott Dewey at (808) 326-4646, ext. 303, or via email at Scott.Dewey@hawaiicounty.gov.
