Hāmākua Patrol Officer Kaleb Caves was recognized with the prestigious Haweo Award during a ceremony at the Hawai‘i County Council chambers in Hilo on December 18, 2024. The award highlights his remarkable investigative work, which led to the recovery of stolen property in several cases during his initial months on solo patrol.

A graduate of the 99th recruit class, Officer Caves swiftly demonstrated his capabilities within weeks of beginning solo patrol duties. On September 28, 2024, he responded to a report from a woman whose ex-boyfriend had allegedly refused to return her vehicle. During the investigation, Officer Caves discovered that the suspect had two outstanding bench warrants amounting to $15,000. Despite initial challenges locating the suspect and vehicle, Officer Caves persisted. Two days later, with the assistance of another officer, he apprehended the suspect and facilitated the return of the vehicle. Although the victim chose not to press charges, the case was forwarded to the County Prosecutor’s Office.

Further demonstrating his vigilance, Officer Caves played a crucial role in recovering a stolen vehicle on October 30, 2024. While patrolling Honoka‘a Town, he spotted a white Toyota Tundra matching the description of a truck reported stolen from Puakō. Although he temporarily lost sight of the vehicle, Officer Caves located it in an area known for criminal activity. The suspect had fled, but the stolen truck was recovered and processed as evidence. In collaboration with the Area II Criminal Investigation Section, Officer Caves executed a search warrant, uncovering an ATV rack linked to an earlier theft in Kalōpā. This discovery connected the truck to multiple investigations, and the ATV rack was returned to its rightful owner.

In another instance, Officer Caves observed that the tire tread patterns on the recovered truck matched those at a separate theft scene, further showcasing his meticulous attention to detail. Although arrests have yet to be made in some cases, his efforts have significantly contributed to the recovery of stolen property and the advancement of ongoing investigations.

Officer Caves’ dedication and investigative acumen have not gone unnoticed. His ability to connect various cases and maintain clear communication with victims exemplifies the department’s core values of integrity, professionalism, compassion, teamwork, and community satisfaction. These qualities make him a valued member of the Hāmākua Patrol and the Hawai‘i Police Department.
