Kona, Hawaiʻi – Officer Kyle Murray of the Hawaiʻi Police Department has been recognized by the Kona Crime Prevention Committee (KCPC) as its Officer of the Month for April 2025. He was honored for his exceptional investigative instincts and persistence that led to the arrest of a suspect in a theft case in Kailua-Kona.
On November 20, 2024, Officer Murray responded to a report of a stolen backpack, credit card, and identification. His thorough review of surveillance footage and active search of the Kailua-Kona area led him to contact a man whose appearance partially matched the suspect’s description.
Although there wasn’t enough immediate evidence to detain the individual at that moment, Officer Murray trusted his instincts and remained vigilant. Hours later, when he learned the victim’s credit card had been used fraudulently, he confirmed through additional surveillance that the same suspect was responsible. Officer Murray then resumed his area checks, successfully locating and arresting the individual.
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee highlighted Officer Murray’s determination, stating that his actions ensured a suspect who might have otherwise evaded justice was held accountable. Chief Benjamin Moszkowicz commended Officer Murray, along with two other officers, for their outstanding work and commitment to serving Hawaiʻi Island with honor and integrity.
