HILO, Hawaiʻi – The County of Hawaiʻi has announced that a paving project at Onekahakaha Beach Park will begin on Monday, June 23, 2025. This work aims to address concerns recently raised at a community meeting in Keaukaha and will involve repaving the upper parking lot and the park’s main entry road.
Commuters and park-goers should anticipate the following closures during the project:
Partial Park Closure: June 23 and 24
On Monday, June 23, and Tuesday, June 24, the upper parking lot and its access driveway will be closed. While other areas of Onekahakaha Beach Park, including the main park road and the parking area on the west end (near pavilions 2, 3, and 4), will remain open, parking availability will be extremely limited during these two days.
Full Park Closure: June 25
Onekahakaha Beach Park is scheduled for a full closure on Wednesday, June 25. This closure is necessary to allow for the repaving of the main roadway leading into the park. During this specific work, access will be restricted to residents of Machida Lane only.
The park is expected to reopen on Thursday, June 26, assuming no unforeseen delays due to weather or other circumstances.
The Department of Public Works is carrying out this paving work in collaboration with the Department of Parks and Recreation. The County appreciates the public’s patience and understanding as these important park improvements are made.
