HILO, Hawaiʻi – A 60-year-old Ocean View man is in critical condition following a single motor vehicle and pedestrian collision that occurred this morning near Kinoʻole Street and Ponahawai Street in Hilo.

At approximately 10:10 a.m., Hilo patrol officers responded to the incident. Their initial investigation indicates that a 2001 Ford E250 van, driven by a 39-year-old Hilo man, was traveling southbound on Kinoʻole Street. The pedestrian reportedly walked into eastbound traffic outside of a marked crosswalk and was struck by the van.

The pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. The van’s operator was not injured and was not arrested in connection with the collision.

The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit has taken over the investigation into this incident. At this time, police do not believe that speed, alcohol, or drugs were contributing factors.

Authorities have launched a negligent injury investigation and are asking anyone with information regarding this collision to contact Officer Joshua Rodby-Tomas at (808) 961-2339 or via email at joshua.rodby-tomas@hawaiicounty.gov.
