Pedestrian Struck in Hilo Hit and Run Dies; Police Seek Witnesses

Hawai‘i Island police are continuing to investigate a hit-and-run traffic collision involving a Hilo woman and a motor vehicle that took place on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, in the area of Ululani and Hualalai Streets in Hilo.

The investigation has changed from a negligent injury to a negligent homicide investigation after police were notified by Queens Medical Center, Oahu, on Thursday, May 12, 2022, that the pedestrian, identified as 64-year-old Carrie Ikawa, passed away at 1:46 p.m. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Police initially responding to the at 7:59 a.m. traffic collision discovered that Ikawa was outside her parked vehicle, a 2018 Ford pickup truck, located on Hualālai Street, when she was struck by a 2013 Ford Explorer traveling north on Hualalai.
The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing to investigate this traffic collision through the examination of the vehicles, evidence, and information obtained via witness(es).

This is the 16th traffic fatality this year compared to 9 at this time last year.
