Police Commission Accepts Applications for County of Hawaiʻi Police Chief

The Police Commission, County of Hawai`i announces the following anticipated vacancy:

CHIEF OF POLICE (Exempt)

$153,270 Annual Salary

The Chief of Police is the administrative head of the Hawai`i Police Department and shall be responsible for the preservation of the public peace, prevention of crime, detection, and arrest of offenders against the law, protection of the rights of persons and property, and enforcement and prevention of violations of all laws of the state and ordinances of the county. The Chief shall train, equip, maintain, and supervise the force of police officers and employees. The Chief shall promulgate rules and regulations for the organization and administration of the police force. The Chief shall make periodic reports to the Police Commission about the activities of the police department and about actions taken on cases investigated by the Police Commission.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Shall be a citizen of the United States Shall have had a minimum of five (5) years of training and experience in law enforcement work, including at least three (3) years in a responsible administrative capacity [Hawai’i County Charter, Article VII, Chapter 2, Section 7-2.3] Possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver’s license (class 3) or any other valid comparable driver’s license at the time of filing (you will be required to provide your driver’s license at time of hire.)

QUALIFICATION FOR FIREARMS: Must be qualified to carry and possess firearms and ammunition in accordance with state and federal laws, e.g., no misdemeanor or felony domestic violence conviction.

DESIRED LEADERSHIP QUALITIES: Unquestionable integrity and personal stability. Ability to perform the essential functions of the job. Knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement organization and management. Ability to express oneself effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to plan and organize, including the proper utilization of human physical resources. Ability to establish definite and specific goals for the police department and to carry out these goals as specified in the Chief’s annual goals. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community organizations, government agencies, and the private sector. Ability to deal effectively with people of various backgrounds and cultures found in this community.
