Police Investigate Drug-Related Chemical Incident in Kona

A stack of newspaper clippings, all concerned with aspects of drugs, addiction, and crime, are under the spotlight.

The Hawai’i Police Department is investigating a report of unknown chemical materials at a condominium complex located on Ali‘i Drive in Kailua-Kona.

On June 30, 2021, at 4:30 p.m., Kona Patrol officers were dispatched to the condominium complex for a welfare check. Once on scene, and after further investigation, officers arrested and have since released pending further investigation, two parties for promotion of a dangerous drug in the third degree. The unit was then cleared of all parties as is standard safety practice for this type of incident.

Officers requested the assistance of the Hawai‘i Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Section to conduct a safety survey of the condominium.

There is no threat to the community at this time. The unit remains secured by the Hawai’i Police Department while additional site surveys are being conducted with assistance from the Hawai’i State Narcotics Enforcement Division. Personnel are continuing to work in an effort to identify and mitigate any potential hazards.

Police ask anyone who may have additional information on the incident to contact Detective Kelsey Kobayashi of the Hawai’i Police Department Area II Vice Section at (808) 326-4646 ext. 271 or email at Kelsey.kobayashi@hawaiicounty.gov.
