HAWAIʻI ISLAND – Hawaiʻi Island police have arrested a 22-year-old Ocean View woman in connection with a pedestrian traffic collision that seriously injured a 24-year-old Ocean View man last night in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision. Authorities are investigating whether the incident is connected to domestic violence.

At approximately 9:10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, Kaʻū patrol officers responded to a report of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision near Princess Kaiulani Boulevard and Lotus Blossom Lane. Upon arrival, officers identified Alaina Kainoa-Aukai, 22, as the vehicle’s operator. She reportedly showed signs of impairment.

Kainoa-Aukai was arrested on multiple charges, including first-degree negligent injury and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. During her arrest, she became combative, allegedly kicking an officer multiple times in the leg before being placed into a police transport vehicle. This led to an additional charge of first-degree assault against a law enforcement officer.

The pedestrian, identified as a possible boyfriend of Kainoa-Aukai, sustained substantial bodily injuries and was transported to Kona Community Hospital for treatment.

Further investigation into the collision has revealed a potential link to domestic violence. Kainoa-Aukai is currently being held at the Kona Police Station as Area II Juvenile Aid Section detectives continue their investigation.

Police are urging anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Area II Criminal Investigation Division Detective Scott Dewey at (808) 326-4646, extension 303, or via email at Scott.Dewey@hawaiicounty.gov.
