KAILUA-KONA, Hawaiʻi – Hawaiʻi Island police have launched a reckless endangering investigation following reports of a firearm being discharged during a physical altercation early Sunday morning. The incident occurred on June 1, 2025, at approximately 12:41 a.m. on Puohulihuli Street, near Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona.
Responding officers arrived to find a crowd of about 20 individuals in the area. Witness accounts indicated that during a physical confrontation involving multiple people, a male individual brandished a firearm and fired one round into the air.
Police identified 19-year-old Fernando Villanueva-Gonzalez of Kailua-Kona as a suspect. He was arrested at the scene at 1:05 a.m. for alleged offenses of Place to Keep Pistol/Revolver and First-Degree Reckless Endangering.
Villanueva-Gonzalez was transported to the Kona Police Station, where he is currently being held pending further investigation. Authorities have stated that there is no indication at this time that any individuals were harmed by the alleged firearm discharge.
