WAIMEA, Hawai’i – On the evening of Thursday, May 15, 2025, officers from the Hawai‘i Police Department’s South Kohala District responded to a report of a possible unexploded grenade discovered in a riverbed at a trail park.

Upon arrival, officers located the device and immediately secured the surrounding area to prevent pedestrian access. The Hawai‘i Island Bomb Squad consulted with the United States Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team. It was determined that the grenade posed no immediate threat. The bomb squad then safely removed the device from the riverbed using a reinforced bomb disposal container.

Police are reminding the public that if they encounter any potential unexploded ordnance, they should not approach or disturb it. Instead, they should leave the area immediately and contact 911 or the police department’s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311.
