
Hilo, Hawai’i – The Hawai’i Police Department is appealing to the public for information regarding a major traffic collision that occurred on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue and Manono Street in Hilo.
Police responded to a reported traffic collision at approximately 9:34 a.m. and discovered a black 2024 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, identified as a subsidized police vehicle, and a gray 2015 Lexus SUV were involved.
A preliminary investigation revealed the Silverado, traveling eastbound on Kamehameha Avenue, collided with the passenger side of the Lexus SUV as it crossed the intersection southbound onto Manono Street. The impact left both vehicles disabled in the middle of the intersection.
The officer driving the Silverado was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center with apparent minor injuries. The occupants of the Lexus, a 62-year-old female driver and her 3-year-old male passenger, were also taken to the hospital for evaluation. The female driver sustained minor lacerations and a fractured rib, while the young child received minor scrapes and bruises.
The Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit and the Office of Professional Standards are jointly conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. They are actively seeking any individuals who witnessed the accident or have information pertaining to the incident.
“The Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit and the Office of Professional Standards are continuing the investigation,” a media release stated. “We are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information related to this incident to please come forward.”
