Police Warn Public of Phone Scam Using Officers’ Names

Hawaiʻi Island – The Hawaiʻi Police Department is warning the community about a phone scam where callers are falsely identifying themselves as police officers, using the names of actual department personnel. The scammers claim the recipient owes money for missed court appearances or outstanding warrants.

To make the scheme appear legitimate, the scammers use “spoofing” technology to manipulate caller ID, making it appear that the call is coming from a police station. They then pressure victims to make payments using untraceable methods such as gift cards.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department is reminding the public that its officers will never request payment over the phone or ask for gift cards as a form of payment.

To protect yourself from these types of phone scams, HPD offers the following tips:

If you believe you have been targeted or victimized by this scam, you are encouraged to contact your nearest police station or call the department’s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311. Victims can also file a report with the Federal Trade Commission at www.reportfraud.ftc.gov.
