Public Consultation Sought for Safe Routes to Hilo Union School Project

Hilo, Hawaiʻi – The County of Hawaiʻi Department of Public Works (DPW) is seeking public consultation for a project to create safe walking routes to Hilo Union School. This consultation is a required step under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) due to the use of federal funding from the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program.

The public’s input is being sought to help identify and protect any potential historic properties that may be located within the project area.


Project Details

The proposed improvements are intended to make walking to school a safer and more appealing option for children, including those with disabilities. The project aims to encourage healthy lifestyles while reducing traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of the school.

The project will involve the construction of new sidewalks, curb ramps, and drywells, as well as roadway resurfacing and shoulder widening. The work is planned along:

  • Kāiʻulani Street
  • Wailuku Drive
  • Wainaku Street

These streets are located between Hilo Union School and Kāiwiki Road in the ahupuaʻa of Piʻihonua, Puʻuʻeo, Kalalau, and Wainaku.
