A 39-year-old Kurtistown man, Joshua Allen Sheen, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including abuse of a family or household member, firearms violations, and drug-related crimes.

The charges stem from an incident reported on the morning of December 2, 2024, when a 29-year-old victim walked into the Hilo Police Station to report a domestic argument. The victim told police that Sheen threw a bowl at her, striking her forehead and causing pain. Sheen also allegedly threatened to harm her and damage her property, which caused the victim to fear for her safety. The victim further revealed that Sheen possessed unregistered firearms at their residence on 38th Avenue in Kurtistown, despite being prohibited from owning firearms.

Sheen was arrested later that morning without incident at the Pahoa Police Station, where he had gone to speak with an officer about an unrelated matter. During the arrest, officers discovered a glass smoking pipe and marijuana inside Sheen’s vehicle.

That evening, a search warrant was executed at Sheen’s residence, where detectives recovered two unregistered rifles and an altered shotgun, which was found to have been stolen in an unrelated case. Authorities also seized 530 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition and 30 rounds of 20-gauge shotgun ammunition.

A subsequent search of Sheen’s vehicle on December 3 led to the discovery of 10.07 grams of processed marijuana.

Sheen faces the following charges:

  • Three counts of ownership or possession of a firearm prohibited
  • Two counts of ownership or possession of ammunition prohibited
  • Two counts of mandatory registration of a firearm
  • Possession of prohibited weapons
  • Alteration of identification marks prohibited
  • Abuse of a family or household member
  • Second-degree terroristic threatening
  • Third-degree promoting a detrimental drug

His bail has been set at $290,000, and he remains in custody pending his initial court appearance, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, December 4, 2024, in Hilo District Court.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the stolen shotgun and plan to refer the case to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office once the investigation is complete.

Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact Acting Detective Corey Kaneko of the Area I Juvenile Aid Section at (808) 961-8843 or by email at corey.kaneko@hawaiicounty.gov.
