Puna Man Charged as Felon in Possession of Loaded Firearm and Methamphetamine and Heroin Offenses

Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that a Puna man, 52 year-old Lloyd Cowles, was charged as a felon in possession of a loaded semiautomatic pistol and ammunition and for methamphetamine, heroin, and marijuana offenses following the February 7th execution of a search warrant at a Hawaiian Paradise Park residence by members of the Hawai’i Police Department’s Area I Vice Section.

Officers with Hawai‘i Police Department’s Area 1 Vice Section arrested 52-year-old Lloyd Cowles of Kea‘au on Monday, February 7, 2022, following the execution of a narcotics search warrant at a residence in the Hawaiian Paradise Park Subdivision in Kea‘au.

During the search of the residence, police recovered a loaded semiautomatic pistol, ammunition of various calibers, a total of 224.7 grams of dried marijuana, methamphetamine residue, heroin residue, methamphetamine and marijuana smoking pipes, and various drug paraphernalia.

As the Complaint alleges, Cowles, who has prior felony convictions for Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Third Degree and Prohibited Acts Related to Drug Paraphernalia, was charged with seven (7) offenses including Ownership or Possession of Firearm Prohibited (a loaded .22 caliber semiautomatic pistol), two (2) counts of Ownership or Possession of Ammunition Prohibited, two (2) counts of Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Third Degree (possession of any amount of methamphetamine and heroin), Promoting a Detrimental Drug in the Second Degree (possession of over an ounce of marijuana), and Prohibited Acts Related to Drug Paraphernalia.

Cowles is scheduled to make his initial appearance on Wednesday in Hilo District Court. He remains in custody in lieu of $96,000.00 bail.

This investigation was handled by the Area I Vice Section, Hawai’i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Elyssa Correia Keltner.

The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
