Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that a Puna man, 38 year-old Sergey Tkachuk was charged in relation to the theft and unauthorized control of a Ford truck, that was originally reported stolen on January 13th from a Kurtistown residence, and fleeing from police later that same day.
As the Complaint alleges, Tkachuk was charged with Theft in the First Degree (theft of property valued greater than $20,000, a Ford truck), Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle in the First Degree (unauthorized control of a Ford truck without the owner’s consent), Unauthorized Possession of Confidential or Personal Information, and Resisting an Order to Stop a Motor Vehicle in the First Degree (fail to stop motor vehicle while fleeing from police and operate motor vehicle in reckless disregard of the safety of others). Review of court records indicates that Tkachuk was also pending felony charges for another unrelated Kona matter at the time of the alleged offenses.
Tkachuk remains in custody in lieu of $65,000.00 bail pending his initial appearance today in Hilo District Court.
The investigation was handled by Officer Blaine Kenolio, South Hilo Patrol, Officer Robert Kamau, Puna Patrol, and Officer Bryson Miyose, Community Policing, Hawai‘i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney R. Winston Albright.
The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney remains dedicated to the pursuit of justice with integrity and commitment. Anyone having information to assist local law enforcement should call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.
