Hawai’i Island police have arrested and charged 30-year-old Mark Nakoa Akina, of Eden Roc, with second-degree assault and various other domestic-related offenses following an incident that reportedly occurred on the evening hours of August 23, 2023, into the late afternoon hours of August 24, 2023, at a residence on Paniolo Street in Eden Roc.

On Saturday afternoon, August 26, 2023, after conferring with the Hawai’i County Prosecutors Office, Area I Juvenile Aid Section detectives charged Akina with the following offenses:

  • two counts of second-degree assault
  • kidnapping
  • first-degree terroristic threatening
  • abuse family household member

Akina’s bail was set at $82,000.

The charges against Akina stem from an incident reported on Friday evening, August 25, 2023, when Hilo Patrol officers responded to the Hilo Medical Center where it was reported that a 57-year-old male had been held captive by his son and assaulted with a knife and stick.  The victim also reported being punched and kicked numerous times and threatened to be killed by the suspect. The victim was able to escape when he defended himself by striking back and fled the residence to another family member’s nearby residence.  There, he hid from Akina, and was taken the next day to the Hilo Medical Center for treatment.

Area I Juvenile Aid Section detectives and Puna Patrol officers responded to the scene on Paniolo Street in Eden Roc and arrested the victim’s son, Akina, without incident.

Akina is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Monday afternoon, August 28, 2023, in Hilo District Court.
