
HILO, HI – Silas Zion, a 23-year-old man from Puna, has been charged with accomplice to attempted murder of a police officer, hindering prosecution, and firearms offenses in connection to an incident that occurred on March 14, 2025, at the Prince Kuhio Plaza parking lot, in front of the First Hawaiian Bank.
Zion was formally charged with Accomplice to Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Hindering Prosecution in the First Degree, Place to Keep Pistol or Revolver, and Place to Keep Ammunition. Prosecutors, citing the severity of the charges and the potential threat to public safety, have filed a motion to commit Zion without bail.
He made his initial appearance in Hilo Circuit Court on Monday afternoon, where his bail was maintained at $3,073,000.00. He was ordered to appear for a preliminary hearing and a hearing on the Prosecutor’s motion on March 19, 2025.
Accomplice to Attempted Murder in the First Degree carries a potential penalty of a life term without the possibility of parole. Place to Keep Pistol or Revolver is classified as a Class B felony, punishable by a ten-year prison term or four years probation and up to eighteen months in jail. Hindering Prosecution in the First Degree is a Class C felony, carrying a potential penalty of either a five-year prison term or four years probation and up to twelve months in jail.
The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and
until proven guilty.
The felony investigation was led by Detective Kimo Keli‘ipa‘akaua of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section of the Hawai‘i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Heipua Ah Loy.
