Curtis Mamone, Jr., a 43-year-old resident of Puna, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses following a domestic incident in Ainaloa on January 6, 2025. According to police reports, Mamone attempted to flee after being placed under arrest but was quickly apprehended by officers following a brief foot chase.
Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that Mamone made his initial court appearance in Hilo District Court on Tuesday. After a preliminary hearing on Thursday, the court found probable cause for the charges, upheld Mamone’s bail at $80,000, and scheduled his arraignment in Circuit Court for January 22, 2025.
The charges against Mamone include Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member, Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Third Degree, and Escape in the Second Degree. The felony abuse charges allege physical abuse by impeding normal breathing or blood circulation and committing the abuse in the presence of a minor. The drug charge pertains to possession of methamphetamine, and the escape charge relates to his attempt to flee custody.
All charges are classified as class C felonies, each carrying potential penalties of up to five years in prison or probation terms of four to five years, along with up to twelve months in jail.
The charges remain allegations, and Mamone is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
