Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that a Puna woman, 26 year-old Kalannie Ada was charged in relation to the theft of a Honda CRV, that was originally reported stolen from the parking lot of a Banyan Drive condominium on January 6th.
As the Complaint alleges, Ada was charged with Theft in the Second Degree (theft of a Honda CRV valued more than $750), Unauthorized Entry Into a Motor Vehicle in the Second Degree (enter a motor vehicle without being invited, licensed, or authorized), and Habitual Property Crime (a person who has three prior petty misdemeanor convictions under HRS Chapter 708 within the last ten years).
The most serious offenses, Theft in the Second Degree and Habitual Property Crime are both class C felony offenses and carry a maximum penalty of five (5) years in prison. Review of Court records indicate that at the time of the alleged offenses, Ada was pending two unrelated felony cases in Hilo Circuit Court.
Ada remains in custody in lieu of $21,000.00 bail pending her initial appearance today in Hilo District Court.
The case was handled by Officer Levi Comilla, South Hilo Patrol, Officer Shawn Mirafuentes, Puna Patrol, and Detective John Balberde, Area I Criminal Investigation Section, Hawai‘i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney R. Winston Albright.
The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
