by Thunda

A 21-year-old woman from Puna is in critical condition following a pedestrian collision on Highway 11 in Kurtistown on Wednesday evening, January 22, 2025.

According to police, officers responded to a 7:56 p.m. call about the incident, which occurred near the 10-mile marker. Investigators say a 74-year-old man from Mountain View was driving a 2016 Honda CRV northbound on Highway 11 when he struck the pedestrian, who was on the roadway. Witnesses at the scene confirmed that the woman had been walking along the highway before the crash.

The woman was found unresponsive and was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.

The driver of the Honda CRV was not injured in the collision.

The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is actively investigating the crash, but authorities do not believe that speed, alcohol, or drugs were contributing factors. Police have launched a negligent injury investigation.
