The County of Hawaiʻi Department of Public Works has announced that road paving will continue on Makaʻala Street near the intersection with Kanoelehua Avenue on December 19 and 20, 2024.
On Thursday, Dec. 19, the Hilo-bound lane of Makaʻala Street will be closed, and no turns will be allowed onto the street. The following day, Friday, Dec. 20, the Puna-bound lane will be closed, although both turn lanes will remain open. Paving work is scheduled to take place daily from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weather permitting.
Work on the project will pause for the holiday season starting Monday, Dec. 23, and will resume on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025.
This paving project, which began in November, is part of a larger effort to resurface several streets in the industrial area, including Holomua, Poʻokela, Makaʻala, and Wiwoʻole streets.
The County of Hawaiʻi Department of Public Works appreciates the public’s patience and understanding as it continues its efforts to improve and maintain safer roads throughout the community. Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes and allow extra time for travel during the construction periods.
