During the week of May 10, 2021, through May 16, 2021, Hawai`i Island police arrested seventeen (17) motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 477 DUI arrests compared with 327 during the same period last year. This is an increase of 45.9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 295 major accidents so far this year compared with 306 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.6 percent.
To date, there were 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities, compared with 8 fatal crashes, resulting in 8 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 25 percent for fatal crashes and 25 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island-wide.
