Hilo, HI – Motorists traveling in the South Hilo District are advised of traffic changes on the iconic Wailuku Stream Bridge, affectionately known as the Singing Bridge, starting today, March 11, 2025, until Thursday, March 13, 2025. The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that the bridge will be restricted to outbound traffic only during this period.

This alteration means that vehicles traveling from Hilo towards Hamakua will be able to utilize the Singing Bridge as usual. However, inbound traffic heading from the Hamakua region towards Hilo will need to seek alternate routes.

HDOT is directing drivers heading towards Hilo from Hamakua to use Hau Lane or Wainaku Avenue near the Alae Cemetery. These alternative routes are expected to experience increased traffic volume, and motorists are encouraged to plan accordingly and allow for extra travel time.

The reason for the traffic restriction has not yet been officially disclosed by HDOT. However, officials are expected to release further information shortly. In the meantime, drivers are urged to heed the posted signage and traffic control personnel in the area.

The Wailuku Stream Bridge is a well-known landmark in South Hilo, famous for the unique sound it produces when vehicles cross it, hence its nickname “Singing Bridge.” The traffic alteration is expected to impact commutes and travel patterns for residents and visitors alike.
