The State of Hawaii Department of Budget & Finance has announced the availability of names of individuals and entities appearing to be owners of abandoned property, pursuant to Chapter 523A of the Hawaii Revised Statutes. This abandoned property is being held in custodial capacity by the state’s Unclaimed Property Program.
Abandoned property, as defined by the program, primarily consists of personal property that has remained inactive for at least five years. This includes dormant savings and checking accounts, shares of stock, uncashed payroll checks, uncashed dividend checks, utility deposits, and insurance and medical refunds. It is important to note that abandoned property does not include real estate. Hawaii residents are strongly encouraged to search the online database to determine if they are listed as a potential owner of unclaimed property.
