State Roads and Highways: Lane Closures and Holiday Restrictions for Dec. 21–27

The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has released its lane closure schedule for the week of December 21 through December 27, highlighting a mix of roadwork projects and a holiday closure restriction.

Holiday Lane Closure Restrictions
From December 23 to January 5, lane closures will be limited to projects deemed necessary for safety or avoiding significant delays. No closures, including Highway 130 contraflow, will occur on Christmas Day, December 25. Schedules are subject to change, and all projects depend on weather conditions.

Scheduled Lane Closures

Volcano Road/Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11):

  • Mountain View (Dec. 21): Single-lane closure near North Kopua and North Peck Roads (mile markers 15–16) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for tree trimming and grass cutting.
  • Naalehu (Dec. 21): Lane closure near Ninole Loop (mile markers 53–56) for vegetation cutting, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Keauhou (Dec. 21): Lane closure near Puuloa and Walua Roads (mile markers 115–116) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for vegetation cutting.

Hawaii Belt Road/Kawaihae Road (Route 19):

  • Ninole (Dec. 21): Lane closure near Old Mamalahoa Highway (mile markers 17–19) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for vegetation cutting.
  • Paauilo (Dec. 21): Lane closure between Kalopa and Niupea Homestead Roads (mile markers 31–41) for bridge approach maintenance, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Mamalahoa Highway/Palani Road (Route 190):

  • Kailua Kona (Dec. 21): Lane closures at two locations:
    • Near mile markers 16–18 for vegetation cutting and shoulder work.
    • Between Ane Keohokalole Highway and Onaona Drive (mile markers 35–38) for tree trimming.

Drivers are urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and observe all posted signage in work zones. For questions or further details, contact HDOT.
