HILO, HI – The County of Hawai’i Department of Environmental Management has announced a temporary suspension of metal and appliance recycling services at several East Hawaiʻi Transfer Stations due to a recent fire at Big Island Scrap Metal, the County’s contracted recycling partner.

Effective immediately, the following transfer stations will no longer accept metals and appliances: Honokaʻa, Laupāhoehoe, Volcano, Pāhala, and Waiʻōhinu. The Pāhoa, Kea’au, and Hilo Transfer Stations will continue to accept metals and appliances until their collection bins are full, after which these services will also be temporarily halted.

The Department of Environmental Management is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with Big Island Scrap Metal. Recycling services will be restored as soon as operations resume, and the public will be notified accordingly.
