Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that three men, 25-year-old Herickson Rooshvelt of Hilo, 22-year-old Minson Monta of Hilo, and 21-year-old Anepo Henry of Kurtistown, were each charged with assault offenses related to an incident that occurred outside of a bar in Hilo on August 30th.

As the Complaints allege, Rooshvelt was charged with Assault in the First Degree (causing serious bodily injury to another person) and Assault in the Second Degree (causing substantial bodily injury to another person and/or causing bodily to another person with a knife), Monta was charged with Assault in the Second Degree (causing bodily to another person with a knife), and Henry was charged with Assault in the First Degree (causing serious bodily injury to another person). A review of court records indicates that Rooshvelt was pending charges for another unrelated Assault in the First Degree offense which allegedly occurred in May of 2020.

All three men made their initial appearances today in Hilo District Court. Judge M. Kanani Laubach maintained Rooshvelt’s bail at $35,000.00 and Monta’s bail at $10,000.00. Henry’s bail was reduced to $5,000.00 over the Prosecutors’ objections. All three men were ordered to appear for their preliminary hearings on September 8th in Hilo District Court.

The lead investigator is Detective John Balberde, Area I Criminal Investigation Section, Hawai‘i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Son.

The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney remains dedicated to the pursuit of justice with integrity and commitment. Anyone having information to assist local law enforcement should call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300 in East Hawai‘i or (808) 329-8181 in West Hawai‘i.
