Traffic Alert: Hawaiʻi Island State Highway Lane Closures for August 16-22

Hawaiʻi Island – Drivers across Moku o Keawe should be prepared for various lane closures on state highways during the week of August 16-22. The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced roadwork projects that will affect routes in Puna, Kaʻū, Hilo, Hāmākua, Kona, and Kohala.

All projects are weather permitting, and schedules may change at any time without further notice. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and expect delays in work zones. A map of lane closures can be found on the HDOT website.

Puna and Kaʻū Districts

  • Volcano Road (Route 11): A single lane will be closed from Monday to Friday between mile markers 10 and 13.5 near Kurtistown for mulching, grass cutting, and shoulder work. Roving lane closures are also scheduled near Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park between mile markers 27.5 and 28 for HELCO to install a new pole and wiring, while a shoulder closure will be in place between mile markers 30 and 31 for paving at the park entrance.
  • Māmalahoa Highway (Route 11): In Kaʻū, grass cutting will close a single lane near Pāhala between mile markers 44 and 46. Further south, drivers in Nāʻālehu, Hawaiian Ocean View, Papa, and Honaunau should expect single-lane closures for restriping, shoulder work, and the installation of rumble strips and pavement markers at various locations.

Hāmākua and Hilo Districts

  • Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Route 19): Mulching, tree trimming, and shoulder work will close a single lane near Papaʻikou between mile markers 5 and 6 from Monday to Friday. Grass cutting is also scheduled near Pepeʻekeo and Honomū between mile markers 11 and 14. Bridge maintenance will require single-lane closures at Kapehu Bridge near Weloka and at Moanalulu Bridge near Papaʻaloa.
  • Puʻainako Street (Route 2000): A single lane closure is possible from Monday to Friday between mile markers 0.5 and 2.2 for restriping and installing new raised pavement markers.

Kona and Kohala Districts

  • Māmalahoa Highway (Route 190): Striping work will close a single lane in Waimea between mile markers 0 and 1 and again in South Kohala between mile markers 12.2 and 16.4. In Kalaloa, tree trimming, grass cutting, and shoulder work will close a single lane between mile markers 33 and 35.
  • Akoni Pule Highway (Route 270): A single lane closure is possible in Hāwī between mile markers 14 and 20 for tree trimming and shoulder work.
