Captain Cook, HI – One person’s remains were discovered in the course of fire fighting operations following a mobile home fire on Lani Kona Road in Captain Cook late last night.
Hawai’i Fire Department (HFD) units and the Hawai’i Police Department (HPD) were dispatched to the scene at 9:52 PM after reports of a fire involving a trailer-mounted mobile home. Upon arrival, firefighters found the 30-foot by 8-foot mobile home fully engulfed in flames.
During firefighting operations, the remains of one individual were discovered inside the structure.
Firefighters successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby brush. Due to the lack of fire hydrants in the immediate vicinity, Engine 20 and Tanker 20 provided the necessary water supply to extinguish the fire and conduct a thorough overhaul.
HFD units cleared the scene after ensuring the fire was completely extinguished. HPD secured the scene pending an investigation by fire inspectors. The scene was subsequently turned over to the Hawai’i Police Department.
The property is described as an open lot with a 30-foot by 8-foot mobile home on a trailer. The estimated damage loss is $43,750.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. Authorities are withholding the identity of the deceased pending positive Identification and notification of next of kin.
