TSUNAMI WARNING DOWNGRADED TO ADVISORY FOR HAWAII

Big Island, Hawaiʻi – The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has downgraded the TSUNAMI WARNING for the State of Hawaiʻi to a TSUNAMI ADVISORY, effective at 10:38 PM HST today, Tuesday, July 29, 2025. This signals that the most severe threat has passed, but coastal hazards still remain.

The PTWC’s latest bulletin states, “Based on all available data a major tsunami is not expected to strike the State of Hawaii.” However, sea level changes and strong currents may still occur along all coasts that could be a hazard to swimmers and boaters, as well as to persons near the shore at beaches, harbors, and marinas. This threat may continue for several hours.

New Tsunami Wave Activity Detected in Hawaiʻi: The PTWC continues to report measurements from coastal gauges, including new ones from Hawaiʻi Island:

The earthquake off the Coast of Kamchatka, Russia, which prompted the initial warning, has a preliminary magnitude of 8.8 (Moment Magnitude).

Residents in all coastal areas are urged to continue exercising caution, stay out of the water and away from the shoreline, and await the final cancellation of the advisory. Further messages will be issued hourly or sooner as conditions warrant.
