Honolulu, Hawaiʻi – A Tsunami Watch has been issued for the entire State of Hawaiʻi, effective at 9:03 PM HST on Saturday, July 19, 2025. This watch comes after a significant earthquake occurred off the East Coast of Kamchatka, Russia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Honolulu reported the earthquake’s preliminary parameters as follows:

  • Origin Time: 08:49 PM HST on Saturday, July 19, 2025
  • Coordinates: 52.5 North, 160.7 East
  • Location: Off the East Coast of Kamchatka, Russia
  • Magnitude: 7.5 (Moment Magnitude)

Based on all available data, the PTWC states that a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake. Such a tsunami could be destructive on coastal areas, even those far from the epicenter. An investigation is currently underway to determine if there is a direct tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.

If tsunami waves do impact Hawaiʻi, the estimated earliest arrival of the first tsunami wave is 02:43 AM HST on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

Further messages from the PTWC will be issued hourly or sooner as conditions warrant, until the threat to Hawaiʻi has passed. Residents in coastal areas should stay informed and be prepared to take action if the watch is upgraded to an advisory or warning.
