HILO, Hawaiʻi – The Department of Water Supply (DWS) has announced a temporary water shut-off for customers along Old Māmalahoa Highway between Hulaʻana Place and Kapehu Camp, including Lanikai Place, Pāpaʻaloa Senior Housing Facility, Kekoʻa Camp, and any adjacent side roads and lanes in Pāpaʻaloa, North Hilo.

The interruption is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., to facilitate the installation of a bypass waterline near the Pāpaʻaloa Country Store and Pāpaʻaloa Hongwanji, as part of the ongoing Kaiwilahilahi Bridge project. During this period, affected areas will experience either no water service or significantly low water pressure.

To assist residents, the DWS will provide a potable water tanker for public use, stationed at Pāpaʻaloa Park.

Customers should be aware that upon the resumption of water service, the waterlines will be flushed and cleaned. This process may result in turbid and/or discolored water initially. Additionally, you might notice trapped air in your plumbing, which should release as water is used.

The DWS advises affected customers to take necessary precautions to protect their property and facilities. This includes, but is not limited to, disabling electrical power to pumps or any other devices that rely on water pressure or supply, which could be damaged if automatically energized during the shut-off.

The Department of Water Supply apologizes for any temporary inconvenience this may cause. For any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. William O’Neil or Mr. Darroll Naungayan, District Supervisors, at (808) 887-3030.
