HILO, HAWAIʻI – Residents and businesses in the Keaukaha area and at Hilo International Airport are advised of a temporary water service interruption scheduled for later this week. The Department of Water Supply has announced that water will be turned off from 10:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025, to 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
The affected areas include Kalaniana‘ole Street, Ka‘uhane Avenue, Kapili Avenue, and ‘Uwa‘u Street, along with all side roads and lanes. Key facilities such as Hilo International Airport, the Hilo Post Office, air cargo operations, the Hawai‘i National Guard Complex, and the Hilo Wastewater Treatment Plant will also experience the shutoff.
The temporary disruption is necessary to allow crews to replace a valve within the National Guard Complex. During this six-hour period, affected customers can expect to have no water or low water pressure.
Following the restoration of water service, waterlines in the area will be flushed and cleaned. Customers may notice turbid or discolored water and trapped air in their plumbing. It is recommended to run water initially to release any trapped air.
The Department of Water Supply urges affected customers to take necessary precautions to protect their property, including disabling electrical power to pumps and other water-dependent devices that could be damaged if automatically activated during the shutoff. Residents and businesses should also store an adequate supply of drinking water in advance to meet their needs during the interruption.
The Department of Water Supply apologizes for this temporary inconvenience. For any questions, please contact Mr. Earl Yoshioka, District Supervisor, at (808) 961-8790.
