(HONOLULU) \u2013\u00a0One of Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s most popular trails will be reopening soo<\/span>n, just in time for<\/span>\u00a0National Trails Day.<\/span>\u00a0The DLNR N\u0101<\/span>\u00a0Ala Hele Trail and Access Program, part of the Division of Forestry and Wildlife\u00a0<\/span>(DOFAW)\u00a0will reopen\u00a0<\/span>the M\u0101<\/span>noa Falls Trail\u00a0on June 5, 2021<\/span>. The popular trail was originally closed in July 2019 for the installation of a rockfall hazard mitigation fence next to the falls. With the trail closed for the fence installation, N\u0101<\/span>\u00a0Ala Hele also installed some long overdue trail safety improvements.<\/p>\n

These trail improvements were\u00a0<\/span>made possible\u00a0with financial support from the Hawai\u02bb<\/span>i Tourism Authority (HTA) and the Federal Highways Administration Recreational Trails Program and include trail widening for safe two-way traffic, trail bed resurfacing, new steps, trail side plantings, and erosion and water runoff control measures. New rest areas with benches and interpretive signs were also installed to allow hikers an opportunity to\u00a0learn about<\/span>\u00a0the beautiful rain forest watershed while they rest and enjoy their surroundings.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really about safety,\u201d said Aaron Lowe, O\u02bbahu Trails and Access Specialist for the N\u0101 Ala Hele Program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Before the Covid pandemic, the M\u0101<\/span>noa\u00a0F<\/span>alls\u00a0t<\/span>rail\u00a0attracted<\/span>\u00a0700 to 1,<\/span>000 people a day. In a lush valley that gets 160 -170 inches of rain a year, the trail was an eroding, slippery, muddy mess.<\/span>After a lot of work during this extended closure<\/span>, we are very happy to\u00a0reopen <\/span>a safer trail just in time for National Trails Day that is also better for the watershed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The N\u0101<\/span>\u00a0Ala Hele\u00a0program at DLNR\u00a0<\/span>would also like to thank partners at KUPU Hawai\u2018i,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0Hawai\u2018i Tourism Authority Aloha \u2018\u0100ina Program, Rousse Services, LLC, and volunteers from the Hawai\u02bbi Department of Education<\/span>.<\/p>\n
