HILO — The Hawai‘i County Fire Department has announced that fireworks permits are now available for purchase in preparation for New Year’s celebrations. Starting today, December 26, permits can be obtained for $25 each, allowing holders to purchase up to 5,000 firecrackers per permit. Multiple permits may be purchased by individuals aged 18 or older.
Permits are nontransferable and non-refundable. Fireworks sales will run through midnight on New Year’s Eve. A permit is not required for purchasing novelties or paperless firecrackers.

The use of fireworks is permitted only between 9:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 1:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Permits must be visibly displayed at the site of use.
The Fire Department reminds the public that it is illegal to:
- Alter or remove the powder or pyrotechnic contents from any firework.
- Throw fireworks at, from, or into vehicles.
- Set off fireworks outside the designated hours.
- Use fireworks within 1,000 feet of hospitals, care homes, animal shelters, zoos, or churches during services.
- Set off fireworks on school property without authorization.
- Use fireworks on public ways (e.g., highways, sidewalks, parks).
- Sell or give fireworks to minors, or for minors to use them unsupervised.
- Use aerial luminary devices (e.g., sky lanterns), bottle rockets, or other aerial fireworks.
Safety Recommendations:
The Fire Department urges residents to celebrate safely by:
- Supervising children and using fireworks responsibly.
- Keeping fireworks away from dry grass and flammable materials.
- Lighting fireworks one at a time and maintaining a safe distance.
- Avoiding fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
- Wearing protective eyewear.
- Having a fire extinguisher or water source nearby.
