VOLCANO, HI – March 5, 2025 – A tense day in Puna culminated in an officer-involved shooting near the Nāmakanipaio Campground in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, resulting in the death of 28-year-old Isaiah Kaleo Jiaan Fourshey of Mountain View. Fourshey was the suspect in a homicide investigation launched earlier in the day following the shooting death of a 25-year-old woman in Puna.

Hawai’i Police Department (HPD) confirmed that the shooting involving Fourshey occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, near the campground, located off Highway 11. Fourshey was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries at approximately 8:00 p.m.

According to police, a massive search involving dozens of investigators was underway throughout the day after the early morning homicide. Fourshey was considered armed with a handgun. No HPD personnel, National Park Service rangers, or bystanders were injured during the incident.

Highway 11 was temporarily closed near the Nāmakanipaio Campground intersection but has since been reopened. The campground itself is also open to the public.

As per standard protocol, the HPD Office of Professional Standards has initiated a critical incident review. Two detectives, one with 15 years of service and another with 7 years of service, have been placed on administrative leave to ensure their well-being.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has assumed primary jurisdiction over the investigation due to the incident occurring within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.

“This is still an active investigation,” stated an HPD press release. The public is directed to contact the FBI at Honolulu_FBI_PAO@fbi.gov for any questions regarding the investigation.
