Brush Fire Contained in Honokaa

Honokaa, Hawaiʻi – A brush fire on a vacant lot on Lehua Street in Honokaa was successfully contained and extinguished on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

Firefighters from Company 8 initially responded to a call at 16:05 after a report of a smell of smoke. Upon arrival, they discovered three separate fires burning in a homeless camp on the vacant lot. Due to the heavy brush and trees already burning, additional support was dispatched, including Company 17, Volunteer Company 8A, and BR09.

Helicopters 1 and 2, along with a D6 dozer, were called in to assist with containment efforts. The dozer was used to create a new firebreak along the Hilo side flank of the fire.

The fire was brought under control by 20:00 and was completely extinguished at 23:30. Approximately three acres were burned, and no lives or homes were threatened. All units returned to their quarters with no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
