Kailua-Kona HI – Hawai‘i Police are investigating a single-vehicle collision that occurred early this morning in North Kona, critically injuring a 75-year-old man from Kailua-Kona.
Police responded to the scene on Old Māmalahoa Highway near the 17-mile marker at approximately 1:19 a.m. Upon arrival, officers determined that a gray 2009 Nissan Frontier pickup truck traveling north crossed the double-solid yellow lines and left the roadway. The vehicle then re-entered the highway, struck a rock embankment, and overturned. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt.
The driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was initially transported to Queen’s North Hawai‘i Community Hospital. He was then subsequently flown to Queens Medical Center on Oahu, where he remains in critical condition.
The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit is conducting a major traffic collision investigation.
