The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for the Hamakua and Hilo districts of Hawai‘i Island, effective through this evening.

A Flood Advisory indicates that minor flooding is either imminent or already occurring in these areas. Residents are urged to remain alert for changing conditions, as flooding can become life-threatening.

In light of the advisory, authorities are providing the following safety recommendations:

  • Be cautious while driving: Watch for run-off, ponding of water, debris, and reduced visibility.
  • Avoid crossing flowing water: Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or streams, either by vehicle or on foot. “Turn around, don’t drown.”
  • Seek shelter indoors during lightning: If lightning strikes your area, the safest place to be is inside a building or vehicle.

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if conditions change.
