HONOLULU – The Hawaiʻi Department of Health (DOH) Food and Drug Branch (FDB) is urging residents to be aware of a recall issued by Spectrum Brands Pet, LLC, concerning its Tetra ReptoMin 3-In-1 SELECT-A-FOOD reptile food for aquatic turtles. The recall is due to potential Salmonella contamination.
The affected product, specifically with a lot code of 951790, was distributed to Walmart stores across Hawaiʻi and was also available for purchase online through Chewy and Amazon. It comes in a 1.56-ounce plastic container with a green label and a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 0 46798 78626 9. No other lot codes or product lines are impacted by this recall. The FDB is actively working with local retailers to ensure the recalled product is removed from shelves.
While aquatic turtles generally do not show symptoms of Salmonella infection, they can become carriers and transmit the bacteria to other animals or humans. Pet owners whose turtles have consumed the recalled food and exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea (including bloody diarrhea), fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, or abdominal pain are advised to contact their veterinarian promptly.
Humans can contract Salmonella by handling the contaminated product, having contact with infected pets, or touching surfaces that have come into contact with the contaminated food, such as bowls, utensils, or countertops. The risk of illness increases for individuals who do not thoroughly wash their hands after contact or fail to clean contaminated surfaces. Young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of severe illness.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection in humans include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. While most individuals recover without treatment, severe cases may require hospitalization if the infection spreads from the intestines to the bloodstream or other body sites. Anyone experiencing symptoms of Salmonella infection should consult a healthcare provider.
To date, there have been no reported illnesses or adverse events linked to this recalled product. Consumers are advised to check the UPC and the lot code (printed on the bottom of the container) to verify if they have the recalled item. If confirmed, the contaminated food should be disposed of in a manner that prevents access by children, pets, or wildlife. Do not feed the recalled product to any animals. When handling the food for disposal, use gloves, place it in a sealed plastic bag, and then discard it. Any areas that may have come into contact with the contaminated product should be thoroughly sanitized.
