Hawaii Fire Department responded to multiple brush fires reported off upper Puna road early yesterday afternoon. At around 1:13 pm a brush fire was reported and Hawaii Fire Department dispatched three engines, three tankers, a chopper, and a medic unit for safety.
By 1:31 pm the first units were on the scene to assess the fire. Around 3 aces were engulfed in fire and had spread to both upper and lower Puna road with Uluhe Ferns, Ohia Trees, grass, and brush involved in the blaze. Parts of the fire were difficult to access due to the brush so multiple trails had to be cut to present access. Chopper 1 provided areal assistance with visuals and water bucket drops.
By 5 pm Hawaii Fire Department had the blaze contained and the area was monitored overnight for any flare-ups. Upper Puna road remains open. 3 acres of vacant land were assessed to be damaged with no risk to any structures and no injures were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
