Hawai‘i Island police arrested and charged a 53-year-old man, Kim Kanakamaikai of Hawaiian Acres, with various offenses stemming from a domestic-related incident on Ale Road in Hawaiian Acres, on Saturday night, August 20, 2022.

The charges against Kanakamaikai stem from an incident that occurred shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Saturday when Puna Patrol officers responded to a residence on Ale Road for a reported domestic involving Kanakamaikai and a female. It was reported that Kanakamaikai was in possession of a handgun and was threatening the woman.

Responding officers contacted the victim who was observed with various injuries.

The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center for treatment and later released.

Kanakamaikai left the scene prior to police arrival; however, he was arrested at the Ale Road residence on Monday, August 22, 2022.

During the course of this investigation, police determined that Kanakamaikai had struck the victim, threatened her with a firearm, and discharged the firearm towards her during the altercation. A search warrant was also served on the residence.

On Wednesday morning, August 24, after conferring with Hawai‘i County Prosecutors, detectives from the Area I Juvenile Aid Section charged Kanakamaikai with:

  • first-degree terroristic threatening
  • first-degree reckless endangering
  • ownership prohibited
  • felony abuse of a family household member
  • misdemeanor abuse of a family household member.

His bail was set at $42,000.

Kanakamaikai remains in police custody pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Thursday, August 25, in Hilo District Court.
