In a dramatic rescue operation around noon today, a hiker was safely extricated from a dense forest area off Kamaili Road in Pahoa after being stranded for up to three days. The rescue unfolded when a local resident reported hearing distress calls from the woods, prompting a swift response from emergency services.

The Hawaii Fire Department initially dispatched its BT-10 unit to investigate the area after the resident’s report. Upon arrival, personnel confirmed the presence of someone yelling in distress within the forest. The department quickly mobilized additional resources, including the Pahoa Fire Station, Battalion 1A, and Rescue Company 02.

The rescue teams faced challenging conditions as they navigated the thick underbrush and rugged terrain. Utilizing specialized equipment, they cut a path through the dense foliage, maintaining vocal contact with the stranded individual to pinpoint their exact location.

The rescuers reached the hiker, who was weak but alert and oriented. The man had fallen while hiking and suffered multiple injuries, reportedly being without food or water for the past two to three days.

The rescue team provided immediate medical assessment and treatment before carefully transporting the injured hiker out of the forest. He was then transferred to a waiting medic unit for further evaluation and treatment.

The prompt and coordinated efforts of the fire department and rescue teams were instrumental in the successful recovery of the hiker, highlighting their dedication and expertise in handling emergency situations. The incident underscores the importance of swift response and teamwork in ensuring the safety of individuals in distress.

The Hawaii Fire Department reminds hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution and be prepared for unforeseen circumstances when venturing into remote areas.
