Judge Maintains Bail for Hilo Man Charged for Six Offenses of Alleged Sexual Assault

Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that 23-year-old Temaura’i Border of Hilo was charged for sexual assault related to six offenses that occurred between May and August of this year.

As the Complaint alleges, Border is charged with four (4) counts of Sexual Assault in the First Degree, and one count each of Attempted Sexual Assault in the First Degree and Sexual Assault in the Third Degree. Sexual Assault in the First Degree and Attempted Sexual Assault in the First Degree are class A felonies that carry a maximum penalty of twenty (20) years in prison.

Today at Borders Arraignment and Plea an oral motion was made by Deputy Public Defender Jonas J. Krave for Borders release under supervision. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Nathan Wersal objected for State. The motion was denied by Judge Jeffrey Hawk. Bail was maintained at $260,000.00. Border ordered to appear for Preliminary Hearing on September 1, 2021, at 02:30 PM.

The lead investigator is Detective Gavin Kagimoto, Hawai’i County Police Department, Juvenile Aid Section. The case will be prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Ha‘aheo Kaho‘ohalahala, Supervisor of the Sexual Assault Unit, and Heipua Ah Loy.

The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
