Kapa’au, Hawai’i – Aspiring lifeguards in the Kohala region will have the opportunity to gain essential skills and certification next month, thanks to a course being offered by the County of Hawai’i Department of Parks & Recreation. The American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification course, which includes comprehensive deep water training, will be held at the Kohala Swimming Pool at Kamehameha Park in Kapa’au from Tuesday, April 29th, to Friday, May 2nd. Classes will run daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This intensive course is open to individuals who will be at least 15 years old by May 2nd, the final day of the training. Participants will learn vital life-saving techniques and obtain the certifications necessary to work as lifeguards.

Before diving into the full course, prospective lifeguards must successfully complete two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations. These evaluations will be conducted on the first day of classes and are designed to assess the candidates’ water competency.

The cost of the certification course is $122, payable in exact cash on the first day of classes. Interested individuals are encouraged to register in advance by contacting the Kohala Swimming Pool at 808-889-6933.

Participants are required to bring the following items to each session: CPR masks for adults and infants, a bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, water and snacks, and the Lifeguarding Participant’s manual.

For added convenience, a free e-book version of the Lifeguarding Participant’s manual, along with detailed information regarding the course prerequisites, can be accessed on the Department of Parks & Recreation Aquatics Section webpage.

This certification course provides a valuable opportunity for individuals in the Kohala community to acquire essential skills, contribute to public safety, and potentially pursue a rewarding career as a lifeguard. Don’t miss out on this chance to become certified and make a difference!
