Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that a Kona man, 47 year-old Michael Kaonohi Perry, was arrested and charged for possession and attempted distribution of over three (3) pounds of methamphetamine and fentanyl pills, felon in possession of a loaded handgun, possession of hydrocodone, and counterfeit US currency offenses following a traffic stop in South Kohala.
As the Complaint alleges, Perry, who has two prior felony convictions, was charged with nineteen (19) offenses including two counts of Attempted Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the First Degree (attempted distribution of over an eighth of an ounce of methamphetamine and attempted distribution of twenty-five (25) or more capsules, tablets, ampules, or dosage units of fentanyl), Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the First Degree (possession of over an ounce of methamphetamine), Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Second Degree (possession of twenty-five (25) or more capsules, tablets, ampules, or dosage units of fentanyl), two counts of Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the Third Degree (possession of methamphetamine and hydrocodone), two counts of Ownership or Possession of Firearms or Ammunition Prohibited (prior felony convictions), three counts of Ownership Prohibited (high capacity magazine and prohibited firearm), Possession of a Firearm with Intent to Facilitate the Commission of a Felony Drug Offense, Place to Keep Pistol or Revolver, Carrying or Possessing a Loaded Firearm on a Public Highway, Forgery in the Third Degree, three firearm or ammunition misdemeanor offenses, and Driving Without a License.
The most serious offenses, Promoting and Attempted Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the First Degree and Possession of a Firearm with Intent to Facilitate a Felony Drug Offense are a class A felony offenses that carries a maximum penalty of twenty (20) years in prison.
Perry is scheduled to make his initial appearance today in Kona District Court. He remains in custody in lieu of $402,000.00 bail.
This case was initiated by Sgt. Erich Jackson and Officer CC Melendez, South Kohala Patrol. The follow up investigation was led by Officer Adam Cho, Area II Vice Section, Hawai`i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Nicole Bowman.
The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
