The State Office of Information Practices (OIP) is pleased to announce that it has posted on its Training page six new Sunshine Law training materials to help boards prepare for the new provisions enacted by Act 220, SLH 2021, which will take effect on January 1, 2022, and are largely reflected in the current guidelines under Exhibit C of Governor David Ige’s Emergency Proclamation. Until the new law goes into effect, OIP will retain online the existing training materials explaining the current law, so people are advised to look carefully at the dates of the training materials.
In addition to the summary of Act 220 previously posted in July, here are the new training materials that were created or revised in October 2021:
- In-Depth Sunshine Law Requirements for Multi-Site and Remote Meetings Effective January 1, 2022
- Public Meeting Notice Checklist
- Quick Review: Sunshine Law Meeting Notice Requirements
- Quick Review: Sunshine Law Requirements for In-Person Meetings Held at Multiple Sites
- Quick Review: Sunshine Law Requirements for Remote Meetings
- Quick Review: Executive Meetings Closed to the Public
The newly posted materials should provide boards with sufficient training to understand the changes to the Sunshine Law and to prepare for meetings that will be subject to Act 220 in January 2022. Although OIP is unable to provide individualized training to boards, these materials provide in-depth guidance and any additional questions about the new law can be directed to OIP’s Attorney of the Day service.
OIP is still working on updates to the Sunshine Law Guide for both State boards and Neighborhood Boards, as well as the Sunshine Law training video and quiz. Any new training materials will be announced by OIP through What’s New articles, which you can find archived on OIP’s website or can be emailed to you upon request. To be added to OIP’s email list, please email oip@hawaii.gov. Also, if you would like to receive What’s New articles or attachments in a different format, please contact OIP at (808) 586-1400 or oip@hawaii.gov.
