State CIP Funds Released for Kanu O Ka ‘Āina New Century Public Charter School

State Capital Improvement Project (CIP) funds totaling $1.8 million were released by David Ige yesterday to finance plans, design, construction, and equipment for the completion of a multipurpose building including a certified commercial kitchen space, athletic space, and performance space at Kanu o Ka ʻĀina New Century Public Charter School.

The funds were appropriated by the Legislature during the 2021 legislative session. Representative David A. Tarnas, who represents House District 7, which includes Kanu o Ka ʻĀina, said the project will benefit students and the community.

“Once completed, this school kitchen will significantly increase our community’s resilience by enhancing our capacity to provide fresh and nutritious food to our students who need it the most,” Rep. Tarnas said. “Mahalo to the leadership at Kanu o Ka ʻĀina school for their dedication to our community. I am grateful to the Governor and the legislature for this much needed financial support!”

Taffi Wise, Kanu o Ka ʻĀina’s Chief Business Officer, said the project will contribute to food security for students and the community.

“Kanu o ka ʻĀina is so thankful for the support of the Legislature to build a kitchen for our students who are currently unable to receive USDA food subsidies. The Hawaiʻi Island delegation of Senator Inouye, Representative Tarnas and Representative Nakashima, and their staff have worked diligently to support our keiki,” said Wise. “We thank Governor Ige for releasing the funds and look forward to finishing the kitchen at our campus in Waimea, which will help with the food security issues in our rural community. Mahalo piha to all who have supported this endeavor.”
